The Scout

The idea for creating weapons for the scout came from a competition that was held in conjunction with Polycount.  I wanted to create new ranged and melee weapons that would fit the Scout’s personality, per the contest rules.  Though I did not enter the contest due to time constraints, I did want to see this project through.
The Sling Shot
To me, the Scout represents a mischievous and fun loving, kid at heart class. I thought about what kind of toys a boy might have used in his youth and the sling shot came to mind.  I wanted my slingshot to be simple and classic so that people could immediately identify with it.  After sketching a concept out, I modeled the sling shot in 3ds Max.  The textures were painted to represent the painting style of Team Fortress 2.
The Paddle
The contest required a melee weapon for the same class used for the ranged weapon.  Again, I thought about the different toys and sports gear that a boy would have played with during his childhood.  I knew I wanted a blunt object, kind of reminiscent of the baseball bat.  I finally came up with the idea of a large paddle and thought it would be amusing if the Scout ran around with it.
